European Commission launches public consultation on Waste Management Targets

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the Review of the European Waste Management Targets. The Targets Review Project is aimed at identifying the issues and proposing possible solutions to the targets in the Waste Framework Directive, the Landfill Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. The basis for the review of the targets is twofold: on the one hand it is to respond to the review clauses set out in the Directives and, on the other, to bring these targets in line with the Commission’s ambitions of promoting resource efficiency as detailed in the Roadmap on Resource Efficiency, the aspirations for which have been included as part of the Commission’s proposal for a 7th Environmental Action Programme. The period of consultation ends on 10 September 2013.
