India overweegt strengere regels voor voedselverpakkingen

India’s national regulator for food is contemplating new labelling requirements for packaged foodstuffs. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is considering tighter restrictions after the country’s largest ever food recall began in July. This involved the withdrawal of 400 million packs of Maggi-brand instant noodles.
A report from local newspaper the Economic Times notes the FSSAI is now contemplating making expiry date marking – rather than best before dates – mandatory. Another change being mooted is for food packagers to embrace a more vigorous culture of self-regulation, allowing the FSSAI to take a less hands-on approach (Food Contact Digest, 25 augustus 2015).
