Video: The Ingenious Design of the Aluminum Beverage Can

Recently a video about the design of aluminium beverage cans was published on YouTube: ‘The Ingenious Design of the Aluminum Beverage Can’. Bill Hammack from the University of Illinois in the USA details the engineering choices underlying the design of an aluminium beverage can. Bill Hammack is a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
He explains why the beverage can is cylindrical, outlines the manufacturing steps needed to create the can, notes why the can narrows near it lid, show close ups of the double-seam that hold the lid on, and details the complex operation of the tab that opens the can.
