Coca-Cola and Pepsi alter recipes to avoid cancer warning label
The two leading soft drinks manufacturers Coca-Cola and Pepsi have been forced to change the recipes for their signature products as a result of a California law that mandates drinks containing a certain level of carcinogens bear a cancer warning label. Coca-Cola and Pepsi both confirmed the changes will be expanded nationally to streamline their manufacturing processes. The changes have already been made for drinks sold in California.
The change comes after the pressure group the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) began pushing regulators to force manufacturers to remove a chemical used to make caramel colour in cans of drinks from Coca-Cola and Pepsi (Food Ingredients first Weekly news review, 9 March 2012).
